The graphic novel I choose is Craig Thompson's Blankets. It is an autobiographical graphic novel which tells the story of his childhood, his first love, his evangelical Christian family, etc. It nearly dipicts every aspect of his early life. The main charaters are himself, his little brother Phil, his first love Raina and his parents. And it has many themes. As Jules Feiffer, a Pulitzer Prize winner says: “He tells a highly charged personal story, crammed with pain, discovery, hijinx, pepenance, religious conviction and its loss... and along comes self loathing.” I think the intended readers are young people. Because some of them are also standing at the turning point of life and confused about their future. Or some may also have conflits with their parents and question Christianity. So I think young people can have resonance with this book and better understand it.
When I search graphic novels in Google, the cover of this book catches my eyes among others. I think it is tender, beautiful and fanciful. A young couple are hugging but they don't seem to be happy at all. Behind them is a dense grove which is tinted light blue. The whole picture is melancholy and elegant, making me curious about the content of the novel. And I think the figures the author draws are also very attractive. Thompson is good at revealing the personalities of the characters through the figures' appearance, actions and expressions. For example, at the beginning of the book, when his father appears the first time, his father has a very large body and poker face and lifts his son with only one hand. This makes me feel his father is very strict and unapproachable.
